Abstract
The flexibility of online learning is a significant draw for students, but few K-12 studies have examined how students leverage the ability to access their courses from any place. To address this gap, the current study examined building enrollment information and assignment submission behaviors among students in highly enrolled Michigan Virtual courses. Consistent with findings from the report ‘Any Time, Any Place, Any Pace: How Students Use Time in Online Courses,’ school-based supports may play an important role in students’ assignment-submission behaviors. Students who failed their courses or who did not demonstrate content mastery were more likely to submit assignments at school. Across the sample, assignments were also more likely to be submitted at school during the beginning and end of a course. Taken together, these patterns point to the ways in which understanding ‘place’ can help school administrators, instructors, and mentors craft more effective and personalized student supports.
